United for Medical Research Applauds Critical Funding for NIH in Senate Labor-HHS Spending Bill

September 6, 2017

The following statement can be attributed to UMR President Lizbet Boroughs:

September 6, 2017 – “United for Medical Research (UMR) applauds the critical increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) contained in the bill approved today by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies. We appreciate the invaluable leadership of Roy Blunt and Patty Murray, and their commitment to ensuring that medical research remains a national priority.

“Research funded by the NIH is an engine for medical innovation, a pathway to hope for patients and an economic catalyst, supporting nearly 380,000 jobs and $65 billion in economic activity across the United States. It is through strong and sustained funding for medical research that we will address the nation’s most devastating and costly illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and cancer.

“We urge passage of this bill by the full Appropriations Committee and look forward to working with the Congress to ensure a 2018 budget solution that enables increased funding for the NIH and the medical research initiatives called for by the 21st Century Cures Act.”

United for Medical Research is a coalition of leading scientific research institutions and industries, and patient and health advocates that have joined together to seek steady increases in funding for the National Institutes of Health.
