United for Medical Research Applauds Continuation of Strong NIH Funding in Senate Labor HHS Subcommittee Bill

June 7th, 2016

Tim Fenton, Vice President, Government Relations, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and United for Medical Research Treasurer, made the following statement in response to the funding for the National Institutes of Health included in the FY17 Labor HHS Education Appropriations Senate Subcommittee markup:

We are extremely pleased to see the $2 billion increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Senate appropriations’ subcommittee bill. This allocation continues the momentum begun last year to put the NIH back on a growth path after more than a decade of flat-funding.

This funding level is a testament to the leadership of Chairman Blunt and Ranking Member Murray, as well as to the strong bipartisan support in the Senate for biomedical research. We urge the full Senate to support this funding level so that the NIH can catch up from its previous underfunding and keep up with public health needs and the opportunities of biomedical research. NIH research is an engine for innovation and a pathway to hope for patients.
