NIH FUNDING IN OMNIBUS A MAJOR STEP FORWARD FOR PATIENTS AND CURES

December 16th, 2015

“On behalf of its diverse membership including research institutions, industry and patient and health advocates, United for Medical Research released the following statement from Marc N. Casper, president and chief executive officer of Thermo Fisher Scientific, on the funding for the National Institutes of Health included in the FY 2016 omnibus spending bill:

We are very pleased with the critical funding Congress has included for NIH. Boosting the NIH budget to just over $32 billion is a significant increase over 2015 – more than five percent – and demonstrates the strong bipartisan support for biomedical research as an engine for innovation and a pathway to hope for patients. United for Medical Research (UMR) commends those members of Congress who worked tirelessly to make this possible.

This meaningful increase for NIH makes real progress toward catching up from the past decade of under-funding and keeping up with scientific advancements and public health needs.  UMR is eager to work with the bipartisan majorities in Congress to ensure that NIH investments in medical and scientific research continue to play a pivotal role in the search for new cures.
