Labor-HHS Bill Will Help Address Nation’s Most Devastating and Costly Illnesses and Continue America’s Biomedical Leadership

September 26th, 2018

The following statement regarding House passage today of the Defense and Labor, HHS, and Education Appropriations Act can be attributed to UMR President Alex Currie:

“United for Medical Research (UMR) is sincerely grateful for the strong bipartisan support demonstrated today by the House for a $2 billion increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health. The unwavering leadership of Tom Cole and Rosa DeLauro made this increase possible, and the strong commitment of their colleagues helps ensure that medical research remains a national priority.

“Research funded by the NIH is an engine for medical innovation, a pathway to hope for patients and an economic catalyst, supporting more than 400,000 jobs and contributing nearly $70 billion in economic activity across the United States. It is through strong and sustained funding for medical research that we will address the nation’s most devastating and costly illnesses.

“UMR urges the president to quickly sign this legislation that will not only improve the health and well-being of our nation, but also add to America’s global leadership in biomedical research and innovation.”
